Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, goes on sale October 23, and Samsung already has its latest Galaxy Z Fold lineup in stores. The two take quite different approaches to design: Apple chose titanium, a textured inner screen and a heavier build, while Samsung went lighter and thinner. Here's how they compare on design, based on Apple's and Samsung's announcements and early comparisons. As of October 11, 2026, the iPhone Duo hasn't shipped, so details may change once reviewers get hands-on time.
Design at a Glance
The comparison below uses Apple's iPhone Duo announcement and a TechRadar comparison with the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Samsung's lineup also includes a Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and a Z Flip8, according to Samsung's launch release, but we focus on the Fold 8 here, since it's the closest match for the Duo.
| Apple iPhone Duo | Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Inner display | 7.6-inch | 7.6-inch |
| Outer display | 5.4-inch | 5.5-inch |
| Inner screen finish | Matte-like nano-texture | Glossier anti-glare coating |
| Frame | Grade 5 titanium, mirror-polished | Matte aluminum |
| Outer glass (front / back) | Ceramic Shield 2 / Ceramic Shield | Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 / Gorilla Glass Victus 2 |
| Weight | 254g | 201g |

Weight, glass, water rating and the Fold 8 price come from TechRadar's comparison, which doesn't cite manufacturer documents for them. Check Apple's and Samsung's spec pages before you buy.
Displays and the Crease
Both phones have a 7.6-inch inner display, so the main screens are the same size. The difference is in how they look and feel. Apple says the iPhone Duo's inner display has a nano-textured finish that "minimizes crease visibility." Samsung says its Flex Titanium technology helps with "reduced crease visibility over time" on the Fold 8.
Neither company says the crease is gone. Both claim it's less visible, so expect to still see or feel it at some angles. Reviewers will be the ones to tell how much it matters in daily use.
Apple's hinge has more than 100 components and supports the center of the display when opened, and it closes with an integrated magnet array. Samsung's launch release didn't give hinge details. Apple's inner display also uses a scratch-resistant coating and a custom polymer cover layer, with high-strength glass above and below the folding panel.
The outer displays are similar in size, at 5.4 inches on the Duo and 5.5 inches on the Fold 8. Apple says the Duo's outer screen is 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.
Materials, Weight and Thickness
This is where the two differ most. The iPhone Duo uses a polished grade 5 titanium frame, and Samsung uses matte aluminum. Titanium looks and feels more premium, but the Duo weighs 254g compared with 201g for the Fold 8, which Samsung calls its lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet. That's a real difference in the hand and in a pocket.
Apple calls the Duo "the thinnest iPhone ever" when opened but doesn't give a thickness in millimeters. Samsung says the Fold8 Ultra measures 4.1 mm when unfolded and weighs 215g. Samsung didn't list thickness for the standard Fold 8 in its launch release, so we can't compare exact numbers yet.
The shapes differ too. TechRadar notes the Duo has rounded corners when open and a mix of rounded and right-angled corners when closed, while the Fold 8 has pointed corners.

Durability
Apple rates the iPhone Duo IP68 for water and dust, though it notes this isn't permanent and may decrease with normal wear. TechRadar lists the Fold 8 as IP48-level, which usually means protection against water but not dust. If you're often at the beach or somewhere sandy, that difference matters.
For outer glass, Apple says Ceramic Shield 2 has "3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation." Samsung uses Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the front and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back. These are different materials and there are no independent tests yet, so we can't say one is better.
The inner screens on any foldable are the most delicate part, since they're flexible rather than hard glass. Be gentle with them, keep keys and sharp objects away and follow the maker's guidance on screen care.

Accessories are model-specific, so choose the exact phone you own. If you're thinking about a foldable, check back for accessories after launch. A foldable's inner screen usually comes with a protective layer from the factory, so don't peel anything off it unless the manufacturer says to.
