Which One Should You Buy?

The iPhone Duo makes sense if:

  • You want a pocketable phone that unfolds into a 7.6-inch screen for reading, documents and multitasking.
  • You like the idea of using Split View, and Apple Pencil support, which 9to5Mac reports is coming later this year.
  • You're comfortable paying the premium and giving up the telephoto lens.

The iPhone 18 Pro is the better pick if:

  • You care about photography. Only the Pro models have the telephoto lens and the variable aperture main camera.
  • You want to spend $700 to $800 less.
  • You want the longest battery life. The Pro Max is rated up to 45 hours of video playback.
  • You'd rather have a phone with no hinge. In its comparison, Tom's Guide calls the Pro Max the smartest buy for most people and says moving parts remain a genuine concern.

MacRumors sums it up this way: the Duo suits people who regularly unfold it for reading, documents or note-taking, which is what justifies the higher price.

Before You Buy

  • The Duo isn't out yet. There's no long-term durability data for a phone that hasn't shipped. Apple says the hinge is engineered from more than 100 components, and when asked about the crease becoming more visible over time, Apple's VP of hardware engineering said, "Hold us accountable to that, please."
  • The inner display is made differently. Apple describes it as a custom polymer with a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer. The outer display uses Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says has three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation. According to The Mac Observer, Apple hasn't published a scratch rating for the inner display.
  • The iPhone 18 Pro has had early teething problems. Some owners saw a Face ID freeze that iOS 27.0.1 addresses, and some have reported discoloration around the camera ring on certain models. As of October 1, Apple had not commented on the discoloration.

Do You Need a Screen Protector?

This is a hot topic right now. Tom Marieb, Apple's VP of hardware engineering, told TechRadar: "Personally, when I see someone put a screen protector on their iPhone, it makes my skin crawl, because we work so hard to make beautiful front screens," as TechSpot reported.

Plenty of owners still choose to use one. TechSpot notes that many see it as cheap insurance against an expensive out-of-warranty screen repair, and others want a privacy filter or less glare. It comes down to personal preference. We sell screen protectors, so we're not neutral here, but these are the points worth weighing either way.

On the Duo specifically, Apple has published no guidance on protectors for either display and doesn't sell any. If you decide to use one, choose a protector made specifically for the Duo's display you're covering.

Protecting Your New Phone

If you're buying the iPhone 18 Pro: Magic John makes tempered glass screen protectors in HD Clear and Privacy, lens protectors and cases for it. Thinking about a privacy protector? Read our guide to iPhone 18 Pro Face ID and screen protectors first. The Duo uses Touch ID, so that question is specific to the 18 Pro.

If you're buying the iPhone Duo: Accessories made for the iPhone 18 Pro won't fit it, since the phone is a different size and shape. Choose cases and protectors made specifically for the Duo, and make sure a case doesn't get in the way of opening and closing the phone.
