iPhone Duo Hinge Screen Cracking: What We Know and What to Do

iPhone Duo Hinge Screen Cracking: What We Know and What to Do

Within hours of the iPhone Duo going on sale on October 23, owners began posting photos of inner screens cracked along the hinge. Apple has now responded, teardown experts have offered a theory, and a lot of people who just spent $1,999 are asking the same thing: is this going to happen to mine? Here is what has been reported so far, what is still unknown, and what you can do about it.

What owners are reporting

On October 23, MacRumors reported that almost all of the display faults shared online were right along the hinge, and most showed up as a line of bright pixels across one side of the inner screen. One example it cited was an Australian owner whose Duo broke along the hinge after about six hours of ownership and fewer than 20 openings, with no visible damage beforehand. Apple replaced that unit at an Apple Store.

9to5Mac reported that the cracks appeared to follow a similar pattern. As of Sunday, October 25, Fortune noted that 9to5Mac had counted about 10 unique cases, and that Bloomberg had reported a growing number of complaints.

There is an important caveat. MacRumors points out that the backstory for most of the photos is unknown, that user damage may be a factor, and that some circulating images appear to be AI-generated. Some reviewers who ran folding tests before launch also didn't see these failures, although that is a small sample.

What Apple has said

On October 26, Apple gave MacRumors this statement: "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement."

Per the same report, some affected customers have received in-store replacements, but stock is limited and some are waiting. Apple has not said what causes the problem and has not announced a recall.

What might be causing it

Nobody outside Apple knows yet. The most detailed theory so far comes from iFixit, which tore down a Duo and, according to Fortune's summary, built a 3D model of the hinge using CT scans, teardown footage and Apple's patents. It found that failures cluster just below the point where a display cable crosses under the screen near a central support bar. One possibility it raised is that the support bar doesn't fully retract when the phone closes, pressing on the display.

That is a hypothesis, not a confirmed root cause. iFixit also listed pressure, a trapped particle, repeated bending or a manufacturing defect as possible explanations, and said more investigation is needed. Notebookcheck also relayed a claim on X, citing unnamed reports from China, that Apple loosened quality inspection standards to keep supply moving. That claim is secondhand and unverified, and Apple has not commented on it.

What durability tests show

YouTuber JerryRigEverything put a Duo through scratch, dust, burn and bend tests, summarized by iThinkDifferent. Findings from that single video:

  • Dust: debris got in around the hinge and built up until the magnets could no longer pull the phone shut, even though the phone has an IP68 rating. Apple says that resistance is not permanent and can decline with normal wear.
  • Bending: the body stayed in one piece but flexed more than expected. After repeated bends the inner screen stopped responding to touch.
  • Scratches: the outer display (Ceramic Shield 2) showed only faint marks at Mohs level 7, while the inner screen scratched at level 2.

That is one tester and one test, so treat it as a data point rather than a verdict. It does show where the weak spots might be: the hinge and the inner display.

What we know and what we don't

Known (as of Oct 29, 2026) Not known yet
Owners have reported cracks along the inner display's hinge area. How many units are affected.
Apple says it affects "a small number" of units and tells users to contact AppleCare. The root cause.
Some owners have received replacements, with limited stock. Whether a fix or recall is coming.
iFixit has proposed a support-bar theory. Whether that theory is correct.

What to do if you own or ordered a Duo

  • Check it now. MacRumors notes that hinge failures in normal use should be covered by the one-year warranty, and that buyers have a two-week return window. Look over the inner display near the hinge, and contact AppleCare or your Apple Store if you see a line, flicker or crack.
  • Don't try to fix it yourself. Apple's repair prices for the inner display are high, as we covered in our Duo repair cost breakdown. Per iThinkDifferent, the inner display costs $999 without AppleCare+ and $99 with it. Verify current pricing with Apple.
  • Keep grit out of the hinge. Dust reaching the hinge was a problem in the durability test. Avoid opening the phone on a beach, in a pocket full of lint, or on a dusty surface.
  • Don't peel the inner display's cover layer. The tester who removed it on a second unit said he doesn't recommend doing it.
  • Waiting on an order? That's a reasonable moment to read the buying guide again and decide how much risk you're comfortable with.

What a case and film can (and can't) do

We want to be direct about this. Nothing we sell can prevent a hinge or inner-display defect. If a crack comes from inside the hinge mechanism, no case or film can stop it, and none of our products is made for the inner folding display.

What our products are for is everything else that can go wrong in daily life:

With a phone that's already under scrutiny, it makes sense to keep the parts that are protectable in good shape. That also helps if you ever need to trade in or make a warranty visit. Browse all iPhone Duo products.

FAQ

Is the iPhone Duo screen really cracking?

Some owners have reported cracks along the inner display's hinge, and Apple has acknowledged an issue affecting "a small number" of units. How many are affected is not known.

What does Apple say?

Apple says it is aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of units, and asks affected users to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

What is causing the cracks?

Unknown. iFixit has suggested the hinge's central support bar may not retract fully and could press on the display, but that is a hypothesis, and Apple hasn't confirmed a cause.

Will the warranty cover a cracked inner display?

MacRumors says hinge failures from normal use should be covered by the one-year warranty. Check Apple's terms or contact AppleCare for your case, especially if the damage may have come from a drop.

Can a screen protector or case prevent hinge cracks?

No. Magic John's Duo products cover the outer display, the camera lenses and the body. They don't protect the inner display or the hinge mechanism from internal defects.

Can I put a screen protector on the inner display?

Magic John doesn't make a protector for the inner folding display at the moment. Our film is for the outer display only. But we'll be likely planning to make screen protector for the inner display in the future.

Should I cancel my Duo order?

That's your decision. The risk appears limited based on Apple's statement, but the cause is not confirmed. Weigh that against your return window and your own tolerance for risk.
